
Derrick Hughes is a senior associate with
Smith | Campbell | Clifford | Kearney | Gore, specializing in civil litigation in federal and state courts, with a further specialty in complex business litigation, appellate litigation, and direct sales and multi-level marketing matters. Mr. Hughes has had recent appellate successes in the Utah Court of Appeals, California Courts of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court. Mr. Hughes also recently successfully defended against a breach of contract claim, and obtained a $200,000 verdict for lost profits in a cross-claim in the same lawsuit.
Mr. Hughes obtained Bachelors degrees in Economics and Philosophy from Brigham Young University, graduating with University Honors in 2004. In 2007, he received his Juris Doctorate degree from Columbia Law School. At Columbia, Mr. Hughes was an Articles Editor of the Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts, a teaching assistant for the Legal Writing course, and an editor and judge for Columbia's moot court program.
Following law school, Mr. Hughes worked as a law clerk for Justice Michael J. Wilkins of the Utah Supreme Court. Mr. Hughes has previously worked for the Manhattan Institute's Center for Legal Policy and the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
